Mary is founder and owner of Line and Language, an Essex based business, launched to combine her lifelong passions and to motivate, educate and inspire others through languages, art and education.
At Line and Language, Mary tutors and teaches children, adults and intergenerational groups. In addition to bespoke one to one tuition and tailor made group workshops, Mary devises and leads inspiring and inclusive events for educational establishments, community organisations, museums, galleries and festivals.
Mary has training in and in-depth experience of identifying and meeting the needs of learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, including hearing impairment, ASD, ADHD and anxiety. She has worked with students from the school and home education communities.
An award winning multilingual and multidisciplinary artist, Mary’s creative and education practice explores, preserves and shares national heritage language and craft skills; and has been supported by bursary awards and grant funding from Arts Council England, Essex County Council, Artists Now (formerly A-N), The Hervey Benham Charitable Trust and Firstsite Collectors’ Group.
An accomplished linguist and education specialist, Mary teaches and tutors languages and art across primary, secondary, further (FE), and higher education (HE) sectors both in the UK and internationally. Mary’s teaching practice is deeply rooted in her time living and working in France and Spain. She frequently returns to both countries to source authentic materials, visit places of cultural interest, and refine her fluency in French and Spanish, alongside her native English.
Mary graduated with a Secondary PGCE Modern Languages from the outstanding School of Education at the University of Nottingham, where she trained as a teacher of French and Spanish, conducting specialised research into methods of differentiation and the application of drama pedagogy in foreign language acquisition.
Mary is an alumna of both the University of Liverpool (BA (Hons) Modern & Medieval French) and University of the Arts London (BA (Hons) Book Arts & Crafts) and she holds a CertTESOL from Trinity College London.
